The 2014 Kutz 4 Kidz Back to School Event is a charity project aimed at providing free haircuts, backpacks, and school supplies for underprivileged children in our community, just in time for back to school.
This exciting event will be held August 10th, 2014 at Expo New Mexico Villa Hispana from 9:00am- 4:00pm. This is a charity event that will provide free professional haircuts, backpacks, and school supplies for underprivileged children, while building relationships with the men and women who protect their lives every day.
For many children, it is the first time in their life where they can have a positive interaction with various members of the community. In addition to fostering positive relationships with local community organizations and businesses, children will be given the school supplies needed to begin their school year. This will not only help with their self-confidence but show them that there are people in the community who want to see them succeed and know that they matter.
The average cost of school supplies per student in the Greater Albuquerque Area ranges from $35 to $55 (depending on grade level)! Many children served at this event, have little or no means to return to school with the proper school supplies needed. We want to help the children feel comfortable going back to school.
The primary source of funding for “Kutz 4 Kidz” is from corporate sponsors, such as you. The “Kutz 4 Kidz ” Event receives no governmental funds.
Last year we were able to provide free haircuts to over 3,500 youth. Our goal for the 2014 “Kutz 4 Kidz” is to serve 5,000 youth with both haircuts & school supplies! Your donations will help offset the cost of the event & buy the needed school supplies.
The event will also include a free BBQ, live youth entertainment, autographs from UFC Fighters & Local/National Athletes, Car Show, and tons of other family friendly activities for all participants & their families.
In July of 2011, a small group of entrepreneurs set out to create an event that would give back to the community while making a positive impact in our lives, and the lives of others. Many ideas landed on the table, but one resonated within each of us, having come from single parent and limited income families.
Recalling our memories of the back to school season when most every child is happy & excited with all the new clothes, and school supplies, eager to return to school……. That uneasy feeling of not having the designer clothes, or all of the school supplies on the list, much less a good haircut, arose within us again. The question on our minds….. How many children have to return to school feeling the same feelings of inadequacy? Was this fair, and who really cared enough to reach out to them at a very crucial point in their lives?
We decided on running a very small event to provide haircuts and school supplies for a handful of children. After making our event public, we had an outpouring of businesses, and volunteers in the community who wanted to get involved and help with the event.
We partnered with APD, and 3D Kutz Barber Shop and planned the entire event in under 3 weeks. Pulling several resources together, we were able to provide haircuts to over 500 children; sadly we only had enough school supplies for a little over 200 children.
Some highlights of the event include a presence from several top ranked MMA Fighters, Actors, Radio Celebrities, Mustangs Hockey, The James Douglas Show, Star Troopers & Darth Vader, APD’s Mounted Patrol, Motorcycle Unit, Mobile Crime Lab, Swat Units, and several other APD Units on hand for Display.
Attendees were entertained by local youth singers, and dancers, while they enjoyed free hamburgers and hotdogs grilled by APD’s Horseman’s Fund.
It was very successful event, which we plan on doing every year!
